    Wait, Mary Marvel is public domain? I thought DC owns her.

      She is in the public domain but DC owns the trademark for Mary Marvel and Shazam. Laws are weird. Which means you could publish an entire graphic novel about Mary Marvel, but the words “Mary Marvel” cannot appear on the cover, only on the interior. At least, that’s my understanding, a copyright lawyer would have to verify that.
